What are the Reasons of Bone Loss?
There are different causes of bone loss, such as Dental Infection, Periodontal Disease, Trauma and Tooth Extraction.
When you remove a tooth, the bone around it will start to thin out, unless bone grafting is done.
In general, bone grafts are either used as blocks or as particles.
What Types of Bone Graft Do We Use?
There are several types of bones that we use during this process
Autograft: The bone is harvested from the same person.
Allograft: The bone is harvested from another person, after being processed and sterilized. Allograft bone is taken from cadavers that have donated their bone.
Xenograft: The origin is from a species other than human, such as bovine.
Synthetic variants: An artificial bone made from different origins.
When is Bone Grafting Indicated?
The most common use of bone grafting is following dental implants and for esthetic purposes. To place implants correctly, we need to have a certain height and width of bone, otherwise the risk of having implant failures is much greater. This is why it is sometimes mandatory to graft bone before or during the placement of implants. Sinus grafting is also a common indication before placing an implant.
What is a Sinus Grafting?
Sinus Grafting (also known as sinus augmentation or sinus lift) is an oral surgery procedure in which particulate bone is grafted into the sinus. The sinus is an empty cavity located in the upper jaw, in the area of molar and premolar teeth. The objective of this graft is to create enough bone, so the future implants can be placed in an ideal bone volume. The procedure is performed in our clinic under local anesthesia. After maturity of the bone in the sinuses, we can place the implants in an ideal position.
However, if possible, our surgeons can perform the sinus lift and the placement of dental implant both on the same time, to avoid the necessity of two surgeries.
